How long are personal checks from U.S. banks valid? If I deposit a check from an American bank into a foreign bank before the expiration date, but the foreign bank passes the validity date before forwarding the check to the U.S. bank for clearance, will it be accepted?
Banks in the U.S. may refuse payment on any check that is more than six months old when it reaches the bank for final payment. Some businesses may have contracts with their banks such that checks expire sooner than six months; such checks should include a notice to that effect.
