My sister-in-law made a check out to my 8-week-old daughter and wrote "for deposit only" under the endorsement line. Can she do that and do I have to deposit it?
She can do it, but as the child's parent, you can negotiate the check on your daughter's behalf, and cancel the "deposit only" caption, if your bank will allow this. It's not your sister-in-law's right to decide how the check gets handled. She undoubtedly hoped that the check would be used to open an account for her niece, but it is your right, as parent to make that decision.
