Can Directly Deposited Funds be Taken Back?

I was recently terminated from my job and had direct deposit. I was given my final check in person. However my last direct deposit entered my account at the usual time. Now my account is showing that it is $49 negative!! Can the money that is directly deposited into my account be taken back?

If the transfer was in error, yes. Since you received the payment already, you are not entitled to be paid twice. In fact, the rules under which your employer sent your regular payroll credits to your account specifically allow the employer to reverse a credit made in error, if the reversal is completed within a short period of time after the credit posted.

As an example, consider Social Security payments. If a person passes away and the SSA isn't notified until months later, SSA goes to the bank to reclaim the funds. This may happen even if the bank had no knowledge and the money was spent by someone else with access to the account.
