I have a student loan check that is made out to me and my boyfriend's mom. We both endorsed it, but when I tried to deposit it, my bank said that she needs to be present. The problem is that she is currently in Greece for a family emergency. Is there any way that I can cash it without her?
Many banks have a policy that they must be able to verify the endorsement of all parties. If they can't verify the other persons signature with them there, you could request that they look at a signature they have on file, if she has an account there. Otherwise, there may not be much you could do, short of having the lender issue a new check payable to just you. The lender may be hesitant to do this however, if they want to demonstrate that all parties on the loan receive benefit of the transaction. The last thought is to have someone with a power of attorney for your boyfriend's mom see if they can negotiate it with you.
