Depositing Joint Check with Deceased Payee

My father has a check made payable to both him and my mother. My mother passed away in January 2007. The check joins the two names with "and" and also states that an ID is required. My father is the sole executor of her estate and the check cannot be reissued. How can he endorse the check so that he can get the funds?

Your father should take the check to his bank and verify that it will accept it endorsed in this format:

Your father's signature

"Estate of [your mother's name]
by [your father's name], Executor"
Your father's signature again.

Your father should not endorse the check at all until he checks with the bank.
