Why does my bank still have a hold on my money when the check I deposited has already cleared? The check cleared three days after I deposited it, but the bank won't let me access my money until ten days after the deposit.
If your bank gave you a notice at the time of your deposit, it could hold your deposit for up to 11 business days (two weeks and one day), if it was drawn on a non-local bank, and you made the deposit to a checking account. If you did not get a notice and yours isn't a new account, the hold should be for no more than five business days (one week). If the deposit was to a savings account, there is no limit on how long the bank holds your funds (in most states).
