Obtaining Funds from Check without Bank Account

My bank account was closed because I ran into financial difficulty last year. I have since gotten a "cashpay" account for my paychecks and am content with keeping it. However, I recently received some money from an estate, and the lawyer paid me with a personal, out-of-state check from the executrix. I can't cash it because I don't have a checking or savings account, and I can't open one because my name is in Chexsystem. How can I get the funds from this check?

You could travel to a branch of the bank on which the check is drawn. You said it's out-of-state, but it might be worth your time and the cost to make that trip. If you have other reasons to travel there, the decision is relatively easy.

Alternatively, you may be able use the services of a check-cashing business in your city or town. Such businesses normally charge fees, often a percentage of a check amount, for their services.
