I recently found an old check (more than 3 years old) from my previous mortgage company (an over payment of escrow). There is no expiration date on it anywhere. Is this still good?
Checks are often considered "stale" after six months, but that doesn't mean they won't pay. You have two choices:
1) Call the mortgage company and tell them what happened. They'll either say cash the check or they'll re-issue you another one, or
Deposit it and see if it clears. If it doesn't, you may get a fee from your bank if they have to reverse this deposit. Then you'd have this fee, and you'd have to revert to suggestion (You might also be able to have your bank send it for collection. That is like a special handling. There again though, there may be a fee.)
