I recently found an old government issued check from July 2001, refunding me $147 in taxes. Can I still deposit it?
If it's a U.S. Treasury check (IRS tax refund), I'm afraid it's no longer any good. Treasury checks are only valid for one year. You'll need to visit an IRS office and ask them to help you obtain a replacement.
If the check is issued by a state tax agency, contact that agency for information. The odds are very high that the check is not valid any longer, and you'll need to get a replacement. In both cases, you'll need to prove your identity before the agency will reissue the check.
