What is the maximum time for an out of state check to clear?
Now that is a loaded question! We can tell you what might be a normal outside limit, but we can't give you a maximum clearing time. That's because checks sometimes get delayed on their journey from the bank where they are deposited to the bank on which they are drawn.
If there's nothing wrong with a check that's drawn on another U.S. bank, and there are sufficient funds to pay it, the check should clear within a week. Several years ago, a study revealed that the average non-local check took between five and five and one-half business days to get to the bank on which they were drawn. It can take twice as long for a bum check to make the round trip back to the bank into which it was deposited.
