My husband and I are separated and living in different states. He needs my signature on a check that is made out to both of us. Do I have to be present to endorse it at the bank where he is to deposit it, or can I just sign it and return it to him?
The answer depends on the policies and procedures of the bank where your husband has his account, and whether or not it will accept your endorsement. It is under no obligation to do so, but may, if it is comfortable that your husband would be able to reimburse them if anything is wrong.
Your husband should find out what his bank's policy is before you endorse the check, if possible. If his bank won't accept the endorsement, perhaps you could reverse things, assuming your bank would accept your husband's endorsement under similar circumstances. Then you could write your husband a check on your account. Always check out bank policies on non-routine transactions before taking any irreversible steps.
