Sorting out Assets after a Death

My father recently passed away. He was unmarried and I am his only child. He did not have a bank account, but left uncashed checks payable to him for contract work he had performed. His holdings are minimal, so I believe that legal fees would cost more than I would recover. Is there any way for me to cash these checks since I am the only heir? Also, is there an heirship affidavit for this, as there are no titles to transfer?

The least difficult way to proceed is to approach the persons who issued those checks, explain the circumstances, and ask to have the checks re-issued to you. As for your last question, that's a state law issue. You might be able to get a quick answer at the county probate court.
