What's the Typical Length of Time to Cash a Check?

What is the typical length of time to cash a check from the date the check was written?

Generally you want to cash a check as soon as possible. At one time checks were considered "stale" after six months and the bank the check was drawn on didn't have to honor it. Because most check dates are not reviewed, banks nowadays will honor stale dated checks, but still reserve the right to not honor them.

Some checks also have a date on them requiring that they be cashed by a certain date. If you have a stale dated check, you can speak with whomever issued that check and ask if you can cash it now, or if they'd rather re-issue you a new one and have the older one destroyed. (Don't destroy it until you have the replacement.)
