Waiting Period on Cashing Foreign Checks

If I were to deposit a Canadian check into my American bank account, is there a waiting period to see if the check cleared?

Absolutely. There are so many scams and fraudulent checks, especially originating from Canada, that banks and customers are wise to not spend a dime of the money until they are certain the check has cleared. This is especially so if you haven't worked with the check issuer before, or didn't expect this check. If you just discovered you won the Canadian Lottery, and you never entered, the check issuer either wants a fee from you or wants your bank account information. In many scams, you cash the check, send them a fee, and then their check comes back. Your bank will want the money back from you. Don't spend the money until you call the bank and verify that check was paid.
