Deposited Wrong Check: How to get it back?

I accidentally deposited someone else's check into my account. What should I do? How should I go about getting the check back?

Once a check is in the payment stream there isn't any recall button. You may have to contact the correct payee and tell them what happened, otherwise the real payee may contact the person who wrote the check and tell them they have not received benefit of that item. At that point they would claim the check was cashed fraudulently.

It may be easiest for you to pay the original payee, so they never make a claim. I would try to have some agreement drawn in the event that check you cashed is returned. If that happens, your bank will take the funds back out of your account and pay them to the person who wrote the check. This will take time and you may incur a fee for this reversal process.
