Memo Line Changes

If I issue a check to a vendor that states "Rent for April/ May Storage" in the memo line, is the vendor allowed to change it to say "Late fees/ April Storage" when the late fees are disputed?

In some states the memo line of a check is inconsequential to the payment order; therefore, it is unimportant what the memo line says. There are more details in this Banking Question . If your state recognizes the memo line as being valid instructions for the payment order, altering this without approval of all parties could effect the agreement.
