I stopped payment on a check and received an authorization number for stop payment. The payee belongs to another bank. How will they or their bank know the check is no longer valid? Will the teller be able to tell them right away or will they end up seeing it in their statement?
The payee's bank won't know that you've stopped payment on the check unless they call your bank to inquire about it when the payee asks to deposit it there. Whether or not you've told the payee that you stopped payment, that information isn't shared with anyone else unless the check is deposited or cashed, and then forwarded to your bank for payment. When your bank gets the check, the check should reject in the posting process, and the bank will compare the check with the actual stop payment order. When they determine there's a match, they will refuse payment, indicate on the check that payment has been stopped, and send the check back to the bank that took it from the payee. That bank will charge the check back to its depositor, and normally send them an advice of that fact right away.
