Can a bank try to redeposit a check as many as four times? This has happened to me at my bank more than once and I had paid the check amount to the original payee already after seeing that it had gone back.

There is a rather ineffective Federal Reserve Banks operating rule limiting a check's trips through the system to two. However, a check can be presented (outside the Federal Reserve System, in any event) as often as necessary to attempt collection. Unhappily, if you settled with the payee separately, you may have to look to the payee to get your money back.
