Stop Payment on Check for No Work

I put a stop payment on a check for someone who didn't perform the work. He cashed it at a local check cashing company, who now says they are entitled to sue me for the amount plus legal fees. Do I owe them the money?

Yes, you do. The check cashing store gave the payee cash, ignorant of your stop payment. It is entitled to payment from either you or the payee now that the check has bounced. Since it's easier to pursue you for the payment, that's what they've done. You can save yourself the legal fees by paying for the check promptly. The matter will then rest between you and the payee of the check.
