My bank says that a rent check hasn't cleared, but my landlord says it cleared three weeks ago. What gives?
It sounds like the check was deposited by the landlord, but was misdirected, misrouted or lost on its way to your bank to be paid. Don't do anything for a while to give the check a chance to be found and put back on the path to your account. If it does not get located, eventually your landlord's bank will find itself charged for the lost check, and you'll soon hear your landlord changing his tune. When that happens you should not be liable to your landlord for any fees or late charges. You made your payment with a good check on time, but you will want to stop payment on the first check when your landlord asks for a new one.
