I wrote a check from bank A to bank B. There were sufficient funds in bank account A to pay the check. Bank A takes funds out of the account and returns the item to bank B as NSF. Can I assess the bank an overdraftfee?
No, as far as account fees go, the unhappy truth is that it's a one-way street. Banks charge them but you don't, but you can ask for any overdraft fee back, depending on whether Bank A had a valid reason for bouncing your check. You said Bank A took funds out of the account, but you didn't say why. If you had an overdue loan at Bank A or if Bank A was served with a levy or attachment on your account, Bank A's actions would have been proper, and the fact that your check arrived for payment when it did meant that it would overdraw the account.
