A roofing contractor has asked that I write a single check to its company and two other companies. The explanation is that the other two companies are suppliers to the roofing company, and they want to assure they are paid for their products/supplies. Is this a common/acceptable practice?
If you are comfortable with your roofing contractor, yes. They have suppliers and subs that they would normally pay. In most cases, they work with these companies, not you, and that is why it is common.
However, if you know who these suppliers are and it has been mentioned that you pay them, call and ask if they want payment from you, or the roofer. Hopefully you have already checked out your roofer based on the quality of work and complaints with the Better Business Bureau. If you pay the roofer, and the roofer doesn't pay these subs and suppliers, you could end up with liens against your property.
Also, do not pay in full until the work is done to your satisfaction. That "hold-back" is representative of the roofers profits. What you pay early on is for suppliers and subs.
