Tracking a Check to Prove it was Sent

How long does it take a bank to track a check (i.e., source of receipt)? I had a closed account in which a private entity claimed it never received the funds, although the amount cleared my bank account. My old bank said I could only request this info in writing. It's been three weeks, how long should this take?

That's a difficult question to answer. If you asked your bank to trace who handled the check and whether it was paid to the private entity to which you referred, the bank is at the mercy of the other institutions that handled the check. Your bank can't respond until it gets the information from the other sources.

It's possible that the check was diverted to another party. For example, someone may have intercepted it on its way to the payee, and converted it to his/her own use. If that turns out to be the case, your payee will need to provide you with an affidavit that it did not endorse or receive benefit from the check, and you'll need to work with your former bank to have the claim forwarded back to the bank that took the check for deposit.
