I wrote a check a year ago for a bill, and it was cashed. Two weeks ago, the same check number was used at a store and was cashed. How is that possible?
This could happen because of two different things. First, sometimes checks are ordered with the wrong starting check number, so that check numbers are re-used. The other possibility is that someone misappropriated your account number information and created a fraudulent check on your account. Ask your bank to provide you a copy of the check, examine it, and determine whether you authorized it. If not, tell your bank that it is fraudulent. You may need to complete some paperwork for the bank, but you'd be entitled to a refund.
