I wrote a check to my landlord for $64.00 dollars for homeowners' insurance. I put in the corner of the check "for State Farm Homeowners' Insurance". I noticed that she crossed out State Farm. Is that legal or should she have requested another check or at least notified me that she crossed that out? I am a little concerned about what company my homeowners' insurance is with now.
You should be making your own arrangements for renter's insurance if you are paying rent to a landlord. Trusting that your landlord will take care of such a matter is asking for trouble. The insurance on your personal property in your home is your responsibility; coverage on the building and grounds are the responsibility of the owner of the real estate.
Contact your insurance company and find out if the policy has been renewed. If not, approach your landlord, ask about the insurance and where it was placed, and inform him you'll be handling it directly from now on. If your landlord can't provide you with proof that the coverage was purchased naming you as the insured party, make your own insurance arrangements and then consider whether you'll demand a refund of the $64 from your landlord. The last thing you want to have happen is to have a theft or fire affecting your personal property and find out there is no coverage because the premium wasn't paid.
