Can a bank return a check when there was sufficient funds?
In some cases, yes. One valid reason would be if the balance in the account was sufficient, but some of the funds were not yet available, as might be the case if there had been a very recent deposit by check. The check could also be returned because payment had been stopped or if the date was stale (this often happens in January of a new year), or the signature didn't appear to match the one on file at the bank. Ask the bank why the check was returned in spite of what appeared to be sufficient funds for payment.
