We had a landlord write in the memo section of checks after we gave them to him for rent. He was using the memo section to write what his records indicate that we owed. His records do not match ours. When I brought him copies of the canceled checks, I removed the written notes on the memo, does he have a case against me?
No. His annotations on the check had no legal significance and your removal of them didn't either. There are times when an annotation on a check may have important legal significance. This is not one of them.
