Cashed or Deposited: How to Tell

I wrote a check to another party for payment. Is there a way to tell whether it was deposited to the person's account or simply cashed?

A lot depends on where it was cashed or deposited, and how good an image you have of the paid check. If you can see the reverse of the check, look in the endorsement area. If it's endorsed by the payee and there's another non-bank endorsement after it, it's likely the payee cashed it. That could also be the case if there's an ID check annotation, such as a driver's license number, near the payee endorsement or on the front of the check.

If the check was cashed, you might see all or part of the bank's teller cash-out imprint on the front of the check. If the payee endorsed the check "for deposit," "for deposit only," or "pay to [bank name]" it's likely the check was deposited.
