Cashing Out-of-state Checks

I live in Misssissippi and my son lives in Texas. If I write him a personal check from my checking account, will he be able to cash it at any bank or just where he may have an account? Would it be better if I sent him a cashier's check?

It's likely that he will have the best chances of cashing the check at a bank where he has an account established. Other banks are very unlikely to cash it. There are also check cashing stores that are usually willing to accommodate people without established bank accounts, but they charge a substantial fee for their services.
