Bad Check: How Long to Notify Payor?

I had a person contact me for the first time to tell me a check I wrote fourteen months ago came back as non-sufficient funds (NSF) at the time. How long does a person have to collect and notify you of a NSF?

We are not aware of any time frame required for a notice from either a person or merchant. You should been alerted to the NSF item when you didn't receive that check back in your bank statement or have an imaged copy of the item, plus the fact that it was not deducted from your bank balance. An NSF fee may have been deducted which again, should have raised your awareness.

In this instance there is a debt owed and proof that the instrument thought to have paid it, did not. Perhaps you should just pay them what is due. Published on BankingQuestions.com 7/25/07
