I wrote a check and included what the check was for in the memo line. However the payee changed what I wrote. Is that legal?
The memo line is informational only, in most instances. Some state laws may allow the use of this line to influence the terms of negotiation, however, such as by writing "loan 123 paid in full."
If the terms of the check were changed, you may have a case against the person cashing the check. If the memo line alteration did nothing to change the check or the reason for it (such as a loan payment) there was no harm, so it depends on what the chage was, what it influenced and what your state laws are.
