Cleared Amount Different from Written on Check

My wife presented our mortgage payment to the bank in the form of two separate checks because we both have our own accounts. Each check was posted and cleared as $527.92; however, I realized that I accidentally wrote my check out for $572.92. Now that the check has already been processed, is the bank able to withdraw the difference from my account? Is there anything that I should be doing to prevent this from happening?

Well, the payee bank could try to collect the extra $45, but the chances of that happening are slim to none, because it received the amount it was expecting and has no incentive to pursue the extra funds. So it's probably not necessary for you to take any action at all.

We suggest you chalk this one up to experience, and, in the future, take a second look at checks you make out to pay bills before stuffing them into their envelopes.
