I have checks from two years ago that still have not cleared my bank. The places the checks were made out to show the payments as being credited to my account. How long will these checks be honored by the bank?
At this point, it's unlikely that the checks will show up. However, if they do, your bank may refuse payment if the bank realizes the checks are more than six months old. The bank may also pay the checks, either because it doesn't note the date or because it is not aware you don't want the checks paid.
You have to decide whether it's worth the risk of having these checks presented for payment, when you determine whether to issue and renew a stop payment order. Of course, the cost of having the stop order on file is a consideration you'll want to weigh, too.
