My landlord refused to accept my personal check for rent even though there has never been a problem with any of my checks before. Is this legal? Do I have any recourse?

No one ever is obliged to accept a check in payment. Checks are not legal tender. On the other hand, if everyone stopped accepting checks, a lot of commerce would stop flowing, since there are a lot of non-cash payments that simply cannot be made by credit or debit card.
It may be that your landlord has been burned by some bad checks from other tenants. Whatever the reason, he has every right to require payment in cash or by money order.
Cash creates security problems, and money orders are not easy for many people to get. Hopefully, the problems that come with accepting only cash (and money orders) quickly cause your landlord to reverse course and start taking checks again.
