I wrote a $1500.00 check to a home improvement store. After five months the check still had not cleared and the store called me wanting a copy of the check because they had lost the original. What are my rights? What should I do?

It appears that you still owe the home improvement store $1,500, if you received the goods or service for which your check was written. Since the check hasn't cleared your account, you haven't got anything to give them a copy of, and payment apparently hasn't been made.
Contact your bank to stop payment on the original check, and send the store a replacement, asking them to deposit it promptly. To make things equitable, you might suggest that the store absorb the cost of your stop payment fee, since they lost the check in the first place.
