Can I type "Check void after 60 days" on the front of a personal check?
You can certainly do that, but don't rely on it to prevent payment after two months. Most banks have included language in their account contracts that says they can ignore such a legend on checks unless the bank specifically and separately agrees to honor it. In such cases, banks often charge an extra account-monitoring fee.
From a practical point of view, most checks are not examined to read their dates. In fact, even very old checks can legally be paid if the bank doesn't know that its customer doesn't want them paid, so, if for some reason your check isn't paid until 90 days from its date, you probably won't have a valid claim against your bank for honoring the check. If, however, all you want to do is encourage the payee not to "sit on" the check, we think that adding the "void after 60 days" language may do the trick.
