Wrong Account Number on Receipt: How to Fix?

I made a purchase with my credit card and later noticed that the receipt had the wrong account number on it. How can this happen? Is there any way that I can rectify this situation so that it doesn't come back to me later?

Contact the issuer of the credit card, and describe exactly what happened. The account number on credit card receipts is supposed to be masked so that no more than the last five digits show, If the transaction was handled with an electronic card reader. The expiration date should also not be shown. That rule doesn't apply if the merchnat is still using one of the old "knuckle buster" machines that imprint the card number on manual credit card slips.

If there's a complete number on the slip, it may not even be your card number. It may be the merchant number. Your bank should be able to clear this up for you.
