Penalized for Being 20 Days Late?

We have a second mortgage with our bank and are twenty days late on payment. They placed a hold on the use of our debit cards. Is this legal with only being twenty days late? Is there a place I can look at the law for this?

Your debit card likely belongs to your bank, not you. If you are past due on your loan and haven't called the bank to make payment arrangements, this may be a way of getting your attention. Your separate agreement on use of that card will probably allow them to cancel use of the card at any time, so yes, they can do this.

What is important to your lender is not your immediate access to your account, but that you are spending money and not paying them. Call and make payment arrangements, then this shouldn't be a problem.
