Check Payable to an Estate

My mom got a check in my dad's name. The check was from his mom's house. His mom has passed. The check is made out to the my dad's estate. He also has passed away. My mom is having a hard time trying to deposit it. What can we do?

Checks payable to the estate of a deceased individual can be negotiated by the personal representative of the estate, which would be the executor or administrator. If there is no estate for administration, your state may have laws allowing your mother to get a temporary appointment for the purpose of depositing the check. Check with the probate court to find out. If that fails, your mother can contact the issuer of the check, explain the circumstances, and ask for a replacement check made payable to her.
