My father recently passed away and I filed a Summary of Release for Administration with Probate Court and the judge signed it. I have since received a couple of refund checks made out to him. What do I need to do in order to cash them? He didn't have a checking or savings account when he passed away.
If the documents you received from the Probate Court designated you as the personal representative or administrator of your father's estate, you should be able to take the checks to your bank, provide them a copy of your court appointment, and endorse the checks first in this form:
Your father's name
By (your signature)
Administrator, estate of
your father's name
Then endorse them in your own name by signing your name once again, below the first endorsement. Before you sign the checks, though, make sure your bank will handle the transaction for you.
