Is an Old Will Still Good?

I just received a long lost Will. My aunt passed away in 1972 and left me everything. She had a large savings account - 100.000 in a round figure. Can I still claim the money after all this time?

The savings account is probably not still with that bank. All states have laws concerning abandoned property. It's likely that your aunt's account was surrendered to the state where she last lived or the state in which the bank was located. On the other hand, your aunt could have spent the money before she died.

You can check to see if there are any accounts in your aunt's name listed on the abandoned property lists at the state. Start with www.missingmoney.com, which has links to a master list and to each state's abandoned property office.

You should also visit the probate court in the country where you aunt last resided, with a copy of the Will. The laws vary from state to state, and its possible that the court might not even look at a Will from someone who died over thirty years ago.
