Locating Old Accounts

My father passed away in 2004. It was just brought to my attention that he had a couple of accounts that had a couple hundred dollars in each of them. I am sure that this money has since been turned over to the state, which in this case that would be Massachusetts. Is there anyway of knowing if this is true, and how I could go about recovering that money, if that would even be possible?

Many states publicize and make claiming funds pretty easy. In this case, you'll have to prove you represent the estate of your father in order to make the claim for any money. Here is the website for Massachusetts where you can search for funds.

If you suspect banks in other states also had accounts, check with their Treasurers as well. Do not pay a finders fee to any company that offers to provide you with this service. It is easy to do yourself at no cost, and there needn't be any fee or commission paid to receive what is yours.
