Form Needed to Close Account of Deceased

My brother passed and I went to the bank to close his account, so that I could return a pension check that was direct deposited. I was told I needed a form in order to do this, but not what or where I can obtain this form.

You will need a certified copy of your brother's death certificate. If you are acting on behalf of his estate, you will need a copy of your appointment as executor or administrator of the estate.

If you want to close the account under a state's law that allows funds to be paid to a next of kin, you won't need an appointment, but will need some documentation acceptable to the bank that you are a next of kin, and the bank may have other requirements. The requirements vary from state to state and from bank to bank. Check with your bank about these requirements.
