Single Person; No Heirs: Who Gets Funds?

What happens to the money in my checking account when I pass away if I am not married, have no children and have no Will? Who gets it?

Untitled

If your accounts are designated as Payable on Death accounts, the funds will be the property of the named beneficiary upon your death. If they are not and you don't have a Will, a next of kin might be able to withdraw the funds under state law, if state law permits it and the balance is under the maximum amount permitted under such a law.

Check with your bank to find out what your options are. If there is no next of kin to claim your funds and no will or beneficiary designation, the law of your state will require the bank to transfer the balance to the state under its abandoned property laws.
