Accessing Account with No Will, No Probate

My father just passed away. He did not have much, and did not leave a Will. The only thing he had was a bank account with under $600. It makes no sense to pay the large fee to probate, to get such a little amount of money. Is there another way to handle this to get the money from the account? He did not have anyone else listed on the account or as a beneficiary.

Ask the bank holding the account if it is permitted by state law to pay the account balance to a member of your father's family. Many states have laws allowing such payments, and, with the proper documentation, the bank can pay out a small-balance account.
