Need Change in Mortgage with Spouse's Death?

Following a death, can the remaining spouse continue to make the mortgage payments without changing the mortgage documents? The spouses were co-owners, but bills came in the deceased's name. In subsequent years, will the surviving spouse continue to take the mortgage interest deduction off her taxes if the 1098 forms have the deceased's social security number and name?

The lender should be notified of the death of a borrower. The survivor should continue to make the payments, pay taxes, insurance, etc. The lender will not require any new documents for the loan and the survivor who is on the loan should receive the 1098-INTs.
