Endorsing Checks Payable "To the family of..."

My mother recently passed away. There was no estate or probate, however there was a Will naming me as executor. I want to open a bank account to deposit the checks that were given as a memorial. How do I endorse checks made payable "to the family of"...

Your bank may have requirements concerning endorsements, so you should check there for the final word. If the bank has no standard or doesn't object you could do it this way: "Family of XXXXXXXXXXX, by [your signature]."

You won't have any official standing as executor based solely on having been named in your mother's Will. If you have to take any action in that official capacity, you will have to first be approved as executor by the probate court.
