Getting Information about Accounts of the Deceased

I have been named as executor on my mother's and stepfather's estate. She preceeded him in death. I have a valid account number for a Wells Fargo account, but can't get information as to whose name is on the account, and therefore can't get information. My stepfather's broker from Wachovia indicated that he moved their CDs from Wachovia to get a better return. I need to find the name on Wells Fargo account. How do I do this?

Have you formalized your appointment as executor, or are you simply saying you were named in your stepfather's Will? The bank is under no obligation to recognize your authority unless your appointment as executor has been approved by the probate court and you have been issued an appointment or Letters Testamentary. Once you have that documentation, along with the account number, the bank should be able to tell you if the account was held in either your mother's or stepfather's name.

The other way to approach the question is the broker to whom you've referred. If he assisted your stepfather in completing the move of the CD accounts, his records should show how the account was to be styled at the new bank.
