My husband died recently. His pension is sending a check "to the estate of ..." I do not want to go through probate. The amount is under $1,000. The bank account is joint with mine and his name still on it. How do I endorse the check "for deposit only?" Do I sign it, and once deposited, can I still use that portion of the money?

If you are the only person to benefit from your husband's estate, ask the party that issued the pension payment if the check can be reissued in your name. Whether or not they will be able to do that will be constrained by the language of the pension agreement. The bank account is legally only in your name at this point, regardless of the bank's records, so depositing the check there would not be correct.
