My father was a resident of North Carolina and died. He had my mother and I listed as his beneficiaries on his banking records. What will we have to go through in order to clear out all of his accounts which are CDs?

If the accounts listed you and/or your mother as beneficiary or joint owner, you or your mother should be able to provide the bank a certified copy of your father's certificate of death (the bank probably will make and retain a copy, but will usually return the certified copy), provide certain personal information if you wish to leave the account in place, and the account ownership will be updated, or the funds disbursed by check to you.
If the CDs still have time left before maturity, the bank may allow you to close the accounts out early without penalty, but will generally not be under any obligation to do so. Accounts with joint ownership or naming "pay on death" beneficiaries should not become part of your father's estate, although they may be counted in the estate for tax purposes.
